In Blanco’s apartment, on the top floor of a high-rise block so new that it smelled of tacky paint, and cement dust swirled along the composition floored hallways when the windows were opened, Manuel Garcia halted his nervous pacing and looked out of the window. He was presented with a magnificent view, across the rooftops of Terreno to the sparkling water of the bay. It was a view to match the expensive luxury of the apartment: and had Garcia been in a more settled frame of mind he might have relished the fact that, but for the formality of drawing up a new lease, it was now his apartment and his view. For the apartment, like all the others in the block, was owned by Drake S.A. and the penthouse was let to the company’s number-one man in Majorca. Blanco was dead, so as second-in-command, Garcia automatically replaced him. But how could Garcia be enthusiastic about assuming power with Stark loose in his territory? That it was Stark who had triggered the slaughter at the Cala Blava villa was beyond doubt.

Garcia had heard of the events at the villa from a civilian clerk who worked at central police headquarters in Palma. As soon as he picked up the report from the guardia civil station in Arenal, the clerk had set about earning the retainer he received from the company. Knowing that Blanco had been killed at the villa, he had telephoned Garcia. Garcia, like Blanco, knew little about the company’s latest international operation which was scheduled to do no more than merely brush across Spanish territory, but he did know that the American Clyde Fairborne was carrying valuable company merchandise and that the freelance Kiki Anson was his contact on Majorca.

With Fairborne as dead as Blanco, Garcia’s obvious move was to try to reach the girl, for company headquarters in Madrid would want to know more than the bare facts contained in the police report. Thus it was that Garcia, panicked by events, had called Kiki Anson’s apartment and shot off his mouth, thinking he was talking to the girl. An English voice had compounded his panic for if a company man plus an Englishman were added to violent death, the answer came up Stark.

Sending the four enforcers to the Sindicato apartment had been a hasty move dictated by a fear-taut mind and now Garcia stared down into the street far below and watched the men pile out of the Simca. He must have had a faint hope that Stark would be confident enough to stay where he was and be captured; now he realised how stupid the idea had been.

As the four men went from sight beneath the canopy above the entrance, Garcia’s nervous gaze flicked to left and right, searching for a sign that they had been followed. Traffic was heavy in both directions: cabs, buses, trucks and cars. He continued to survey the street until the door buzzer sounded, but saw nothing suspicious—or perhaps everything was suspicious?
